What it does

Jira MCP for Copilot exposes Jira issue tracking and project operations to GitHub Copilot via a dedicated MCP server.

Use natural language from Copilot to search issues, create tickets, add comments, change status, manage attachments, and read custom field data.

Prerequisites

| Requirement | Details | |-------------|---------| | VS Code | Version 1.99.0 or later | | GitHub Copilot | Copilot Chat extension installed and signed in | | Jira | Jira Server or Data Center with REST API access | | Authentication | Jira Personal Access Token (PAT) |

Quick Start

Install the extension

  1. Open VS Code.
  2. Install the extension from a .vsix file.
  3. Reload VS Code.

Build from source

git clone <repo-url>
cd jira_mcp_server
npm install
node esbuild.mjs
npm run package
code --install-extension jira-mcp-1.0.0.vsix

Connect to Jira

  1. Open Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P / Cmd+Shift+P).
  2. Run JIRA MCP: Configure JIRA Connection.
  3. Enter your Jira URL, username/email, and PAT.
  4. Run JIRA MCP: Test JIRA Connection to verify.

Configure JIRA

The extension stores your PAT securely in VS Code SecretStorage. Jira URL and username are stored in settings.

  1. Open Command Palette.
